As students ourselves, we here at School of Thought know how stressful final exams can be. Whether they are grade-nine provincial achievement tests, high school finals, or diplomas, these end of semester trials are a challenge for all students, no matter what level, but there are some ways you can make it easier on yourself.

1) Don’t Procrastinate

It’s very common for students to avoid studying, and not just because they don’t “feel like it.” Procrastination often results of trying to avoid a stressful situation. By studying we find out what aspects of the material we don’t know, and there’s nothing worse than coming to the realization that you are not ready for your upcoming test. So, in order to prevent this stressful feeling, we often just avoid the studying. However, this is the worst thing you can do. Procrastinating will only add to the eventual stress because then by the time you figure out what you don’t know it’s too late. To prevent this, it is so important to start studying for exams as early as possible, even if it seems stressful in the short-term. This is by far one of the most important steps you can take to not only ensure you will have enough time to prepare, but also limit your stress in the long run.

2) Take Breaks

While studying early and often is an important aspect of exam preparation, balancing your time spent preparing with meaningful breaks is just as important. Taking breaks is important to give your brain a chance to recharge and retain all the information you have just spent hours trying to learn, and without them studying is simply less effective.

3) Hire a Tutor

And finally, getting an additional boost from a tutor can be the difference between a pass and a fail, or an 80% and a 90%. At School of Thought Tutoring we can help students achieve whatever their goals are for finals, in whatever core subject. Supplementing your individual study with guided review is a great way to get clarification on any particular aspects of a course, as well as consolidate the things you have learned on your own.
